Bun Challenge, Week 3

My scalp had been really oily for the last week. Like, rubbing-my-finger-on-my-scalp-meant-I-didn't-need-to-use-oil-my-cuticles oily. I reckon this is because I only did a Cassia last week instead of a cleansing wash. If it continues to act like this, I'm going to have to do a proper wash every week, despite the other shenanigans I may be planning.

The thought of having to do a Bentonite mask...then a Cassia treatment...then a deep condition....all in the same day is seriously filling me with dread.
I'll try it out eventually - not today though!

On a fantastic note, I checked out my ends the other day to check for splits. I have to do this every month, since my hair is so fine, they tend to pop up regularly.
Over the entirety of my head, I only found two.

Yeah, that's how excited I was. Two splits? Over my entire head of fine hair? Including my crown?
Hello happiness!

I snipped them off, because they were pretty huge BUT I think this is a definite sign of progress!

 - I oiled hair with coconut oil, finger detangled and then left it overnight.

- Mixed up bentonite clay with water and ACV, slathered my head and scalp in it. Left on for 30 minutes.

- Rinsed thoroughly, making sure to aim the shower head at my scalp to remove any debris.

- Gently wrung excess water out of my hair and applied the oily conditioner from last week. Left on for about 5 minutes and then rinsed.

- Applied home made leave in, and then sealed with a few drops (like, 6 per side) of hemp seed oil, and then coconut oil to cover the smell. It's so...pungent that it makes me really paranoid that I'll be stopped by the sniffer dogs at the station.

Then I flat twisted the hair in two parts back into a ponytail. Divided ponytail into three twists and finally, pinned them up into a bun.

Yes, the lighting is terrible, but at least you can see the glint of the pin, revealing it's location :)
Yeah, the lighting is pretty appalling...

Flat Twisting Flop

*Heavy sigh*

Ahem. Right. Okay. Um. *Clears throat* Right.

Okay, you know what? Hugh Grant style English foppishness? Go sit over there.

Basically, a year after my faux smooshed sides post and I'm still rubbish at flat twisting >.<. I can do the big ones that don't necessitate any level of precision; they just seem to work out.

But as soon as any skill, dexterity or, er, accuracy is needed, it all goes to...er, Leeds. [How is that phrase usually finished? Where do things usually go when it all goes wrong?]
During my twist realisation, I decided that some small flat twists would be a great idea.

And they totally would have been a great idea!
If I had any ability whatsoever to do them!

And of course, one gave up hair Youtube videos for Lent, so couldn't even watch a tutorial.
Hello creek. Good-byyye paddle.

This is the first ones. Well, the first flat twist I tried. This is probably about the 8th attempt on this flat twist alone.

Finding discernible flat twists that I did myself is a bit like a Bigfoot sighting - rare and unusual but everyone else will think you're crazy for focusing on it so much.

There are more flat twists, buried somewhere on my head because you cannot tell that they are there at all (despite my attempt at a starburst pattern).
Maybe they are practising for their ninja camouflage exam, or their spy concealment assessment.
They are totally on point for a first class pass grade.

Great for their future ninja and spy careers, not so great for my attempt at a more elaborate hair style.

Back to the Bun and a Predictable Twist

The Wonder Thing: Aw, your hair looks nice.
Me: Thank you! *Grins and leans over conspiratorially* There are two socks in there.

The last time I did this style, all my socks were intact and I used a knee support that was embarrassingly obvious at times [lesson learnt: white knee support + black hair = a stupid idea]. I knew it wasn't the best at the time, but I was loathe to cut up a perfectly good sock and widow it's partner.

This time, I learnt my lesson. Plus, a few socks had bitten the proverbial dust since then, so provided a brilliant foundation for my new doughnut/sock bun ring (because there's no way I'm paying £5 for one from Boots).

Sorry Snoops....

I repeated these actions with a black sock (to avoid being exposed) and rolled it onto and over the grey one.
Et voilà!

And the predictable twist!

Luxuriating with Laziness

After spending two days taking my twists down, I didn't really want to do anything else with it.

I cleaned it with a mix of a little something something (if it works out, I'll let you know) and then put my hair up into a ponytail with a quiff. Or a hump. Or a pompadour. Whatever it's called :)

Anyway, I took the opportunity to just not do anything to my hair. I'm not even joking. I literally went to bed like this. Woke up. Maybe fluffled the ponytail bit. And then didn't take a look in the mirror again to peek my hair until the next morning.

I played a netball match as well (and my body suffered for it for about 3 days afterwards, kai!). Since I knew that the team we were playing uh, hated us, I decided that having my hair free was not a good idea.
But it still had to be, you know, cute. Yep, proving my defiance by maintaining my appearance. An oldie but a goodie!
I decided to pull out my dear old style, two puffy buns: my hair was parted (roughly, didn't want to make too much effort) into two sections and each section was rolled under in a lazy bun (pull hair through the hair band in a ponytail, then only pulling it through the hair band halfway the second time). On the left section, I flat twisted my fringe as well and then tucked/pinned it into the section/bun behind it.

And then beat we them by one goal. I don't even know the actual score. I just know it was one goal - and that is enough.

I don't want to take all the credit but I do think that the laissez faire attitude behind my hairstyle definitely helped boost morale and let the other team know we meant business...
